Discussion List

Here are some of our upcoming discussion questions, and I’m adding more all the time.  I’d love to discuss your ideas, too – please click here to send them in.  I’ll give precedence to book club members’ discussion topics instead of my own, so please don’t despair at the long list of questions already showing here – yours will come out on top! (I may want to rephrase your question – if so, I’ll contact you for your approval before posting the revised question.)

Upcoming discussion questions in random order:

  • What was your favourite book as a child?  A young adult?  Now?  What was it about the book that captivated you?  Do your earlier favourites still resonate with you?
  • In Book 1, NEVER SAY SPY, what did you identify as John’s key characteristics at the beginning of the book?  Did that change by the end of the book?  How did John’s personality and life experience shape the direction of the story both in Book 1 and throughout the series? How did your opinion change as you read the subsequent books in the series?
  • What needs to change in Aydan and Hellhound’s relationship?  What needs to stay the same?
  • What needs to change in Aydan and John’s relationship?  What needs to stay the same?
  • In Book 1, NEVER SAY SPY, what did you identify as Hellhound’s key characteristics at the beginning of the book?  Did that change by the end of the book?  How did Hellhound’s personality and life experience shape the direction of the story both in Book 1 and throughout the series? How did your opinion change as you read the subsequent books in the series?
  • Is Aydan’s skill set (computers, construction, auto mechanics, marksmanship) unrealistic or merely non-typical?  Does it add to or detract from the stories?  How would your opinion change if Aydan were male?
  • Each of the books has an underlying theme or moral question in addition to the shoot-’em-up storyline.  What did you interpret from each book?
  • In Book 11, John betrays Aydan’s trust when he drags her into the male supremacist compound without considering the risk to her.  What does this mean to their relationship?
  • John is driven, aggressive, focused, and competitive.  These traits plus his stature and good looks have by and large gotten him whatever he wanted all his life.  How does this sense of entitlement affect his relationship with and pursuit of Aydan?  Is she a goal/challenge?  Does he want her only on his terms?
